smoke ascends from the ashtray
the muted TV plays
no one knows my name around here
I’ve thought about you now and then
but lately I can’t stop thinking
of each moment I managed to fail you
with each drag I take, I can’t seem to exhale you
outside the darkness frays
headlights head for the highway
but me, I got nowhere to get to
maybe work took its toll
maybe we were getting old
or maybe we were star-crossed from the get-go
or maybe I did wrong and just wouldn’t say so
I hitched a ride to the sunset
you learn how to forget
as darkness descends on the horizon
but dawn’s light intersects
each memory I regret
I’m here in room 19 at the Sunset
in my own sort of personal hell
sunrise at the Sunset Motel
I remember autumn air
you descending down the stairs
my heart beating in my chest
we walked to the formal dance
high on holding hands
held in golden hour light
each breath I took of you burned so bright
I hitched a ride to the sunset
you learn how to forget
as darkness descends on the horizon
but dawn’s light intersects
each memory I regret
I’m here in room 19 at the Sunset
in my own sort of personal hell
sunrise at the Sunset Motel
if I could do it all again
I’d do it all different
just to wake up where you are
it gets hot in this room
last night was a harvest moon
this morning it still hangs there like a beacon
I step out in the cool air and breathe in
